Statement on generative Artificial Intelligence

Generative AI refers to an artificial intelligence model capable of creating new images, text or audio from existing data sets. While modes of generative AI are not new, recent advancements have made software widely accessible for general and commercial applications.

Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool, with the potential to add value to some creative workflows. However, the wide-spread adoption of generative AI has outpaced the ability of  regulation to protect public intellectual property and well as the livelihoods of people working in commercial art.

It is essential that generative AI be subject to regulatory control via legislation. The current image database, scraped without consent from the existing internet, must be purged. Art generated by artificial intelligence engines under the current model should not be extended copyright privileges. It is unethical to claim as one’s own, collectively produced work, without properly attributing and/or compensating the originators of the input.

I support the use of tools such as GLAZE to allow artists to protect their work in this unregulated landscape.

I am proud to offer work that represents my years of observation, collection of influences and individual life experience.

I will continue to speak out against the theft inherent in generative AI and its harm within the illustration industry.
